What is Landvernd?
Icelandic Environment Association

The Association has the following objectives:

1. To promote the conservation of nature, the protection of the country's cultural landscape and the responsible use of land and ocean.

2. To promote the protection and reclamation of both soil and vegetation.

3. To promote sustainable utilization of land and ocean resources.

4. To promote the outdoors, to make nature more accessible and to encourage healthy lifestyles.
5. To promote international co-operation for environmental protection and nature conservation.
6. To help reduce pollution and limit activities that are environmentally harmful.
7. To promote ecological and environmental awareness of the Icelandic nature and environment.

According to the rules of Landvernd,
the Association shall implement it objectives through:


Educational activities such as publications, the holding of courses, lectures, conferences and co-operation with the media.

Active participation in debates relating to environmental policies in Iceland, as well as through international co-operation and open dialogue with the government.

By actively engaging organizations, commercial enterprises and individuals in educational programmes designed to protect and improve the environment.

Membership
Individuals, organizations, associations and commercial enterprises can all become members of the Association. About 45 groups and organisations are currently members. The organisation has a limited number of individuals as members. However, it should be noted that Landvernd is in the process of strengthening individual membership.

The Chairman of Landvernd is Mr. Björgólfur Thorsteinsson, economist.

Mr. Bergur Sigurðsson is the executive manager for Landvernd.

Landvernd is a member of World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the Foundation for Environmental Education.
